Muni Long Promos New Song with Help from Mariah Carey Impersonator — but Claims There's No Shade Being Thrown

Is Muni Long shading Mariah Carey?

On Monday, Nov. 24, the singer-songwriter shared a promo video on Instagram for her latest song "Delulu" — and she cast a Carey impersonator for the skit. Afterward, the "Made for Me" singer said there was no shade intended.

In the skit, a Carey, 56, impersonator — who delivers an over-the-top diva performance — walks in to what appears to be an audition for Long, 37, and she sings a few notes from "Delulu."

"I just... don't like when other people sing my songs," Long says at the end of the clip with a wink.

Long captioned the post, "THE DIVA!?!!!! My cute lil number? ✨✨✨✨✨🪽 and maybe…I can come around to people singing my songs if this who singing it!"

In a second clip, Long says she felt like "that girl" because Carey showed up to her rehearsal. Then, the Carey impersonator suddenly appears behind her.

"I'm that girl — but we love everyone," the impersonator says before pushing Long off a ledge.

"AND YOU KNOW WHAT!? She could push me off of every ledge in sight. THANK YOU!!! I LOVE HA!!! 🦋 now go stream #Delulu and show some respeck!" she captioned the second clip.

On her Instagram Stories, Long wrote in a statement: "Ya'll don't be delulu. I would never disrespect Queen Mariah!!!!!! Forever a Lamb."

The skits come after Long performed Carey's hit "We Belong Together" at the iHeartRadio Music Awards 2025 — and the star seemed unimpressed in a viral clip.

Afterward, however, Long set the record straight and said it was Carey who asked her to perform the song. "The people that's got a lot to say, you don't understand how this paying homage and having respect for people..." she said in a social media video reposted by The Shade Room.

"She asked me to do it," Long said of the "Obsessed" singer. "You thought I chose to get on TV and sing a Mariah Carey song? You thought that was my choice? Why would I do that? Nobody can sing Mariah's songs like Mariah. Nobody."

"I did my best, and that's all I can do," she continued.

At the time, she also said that she had footage of Carey praising her performance, though she wouldn't be posting it "because [Carey's] lighting wasn't right. And I'm not gonna do that to my girl. You know how Ms. Carey is about her lighting." (In the Nov. 24 Instagram skit, the Carey impersonator gives Long tips on the best lighting.)

"She told me I did a great job, she appreciated it. And that's it. Once again, if she pushed me down the stairs, if she told me she hated it, I would say thank you. That's what I would say," she concluded.

In an interview with GQ in September, Carey was asked what she thought about the performance.

"I love Muni Long! I just didn't know that she had done 'We Belong Together' [as a cover] ‘cause her song was so similar to 'We Belong Together.' I had no idea that she did 'We Belong Together,'" said Carey.

When the interviewer noted she had "changed it up" and "made it her own," the "Touch My Body" singer expressed how "honored and flattered" she was that she covered it.

"I love Muni Long, she's a great person, umm, but I just don't like people doing my songs," Carey said at the time.
