Jenna Bush Hager Shares Why Her Daughters Had a 'Dark' Reaction to “Cinderella” When They Were Younger

Jenna Bush Hager's daughters had a unique reaction to watching Cinderella.

On the Monday, Nov. 24 episode of Today with Jenna & Friends, the mom of three spoke with guest cohost Andy Cohen about the 1950 Disney film Cinderella. Cohen initially criticized the film, saying that it's mostly "cat and mouse" and that he wants more of the characters getting glammed up.

Bush Hager then said that her daughters — Mila and Poppy, now 12 and 10 — had a different experience with the movie. They saw that Cinderella was orphaned and lived with her evil stepmother and stepsisters, and they were concerned it would happen to them.

"When my kids were little, my girls would watch so many of those things that they just assumed I was going to die," said the mom of three. She added that her older daughter approached someone at Today to express her concerns.

"Mila came to work here and Donna, adorable Donna who works here, she came up to Donna and goes, 'When my mom dies, will you be my stepmother?' It's dark!" Bush Hager exclaimed.

Back in October, the mom of three posted an entry to her Voices at the Table newsletter where she opened up about how she parents in the modern world. In the entry, Bush Hager shared a snap of her daughter Mila's answers to her homework assignment, where the 12-year-old responded to an "I want" prompt.

"My daughter brought me to tears with this school assignment, where she answered the prompt 'I want.' " Bush Hager wrote in her Instagram Stories promoting her latest newsletter release. 

In the assignment, Bush Hager's daughter wrote that she wants "the world to be peaceful and scary stuff to be fake," as well as that she wants to "meet my mom when she was my age." The proud mom said that her daughter's profound words are what "made me teary," as she reflected on whether she worried about "the plight of the world" when she was a tween.

"I realized that sometimes I find the most comfort in the beauty and innocence of my children," she wrote. "All I have to do is read their assignments, cuddle with them at night, pay attention to the creative and loving things they say — and then I feel like our world is filled with such profound and sparkly hope."

She added, "As I watch them sleep, I feel our world is a beautiful beach, filled with sea glass in colors we have never found before."
