Robert Irwin became the ultimate heartthrob while competing on Dancing with the Stars.

The wildlife conservationist — who is the son of late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin and Terri Irwin — entered the spotlight while competing on and ultimately winning season 34 of the reality competition show. When the season first premiered, his pro partner Witney Carson revealed that her DMs were getting flooded from fans wanting to date Irwin.

"Girls, I love ya, thank you for the applications through somehow my email and flooding the DMs," the pro wrote on her Instagram Stories at the time. “If I could line you all up with Robert, I would because you're all 10/10 perfect cuties."

Carson continued, joking, "We are currently dancing our lives away so we are unable to respond. Robert for The Bachelor?! Idk this is too stressful for me to handle lol!"

Irwin previously dated Rorie Buckey — the niece of late actor Heath Ledger — for over a year. More recently, he sparked dating rumors with Dancing with the Stars season 32 champion Xochitl Gomez after one of the judges pointed out their obvious "chemistry" during the Relay Dance round of the competition.

Irwin dated Buckey for over a year

Irwin and Buckey were first linked in November 2022, when they were spotted together on an outing in Australia. Shortly after, Buckey's father, Nathan, confirmed they were dating and said the couple "absolutely" had his seal of approval.

The pair kept their romance out of the spotlight until they made their red carpet debut in July 2023 and went Instagram official the following month.

After over a year of dating, Irwin and Buckey announced their split in a joint statement on Instagram in February 2024, writing that they "profoundly appreciate all the time spent together and wish one another all the very best into the future."

Irwin is waiting for the “stars to align” to find his partner

During an April 2025 conversation with PEOPLE, Irwin opened up about his relationship status, answering a big question on fans' minds.

"I'm single," he said. "It's funny, I'm at this point in my life where I'm like, I'm so open to that, but I'm just waiting for the stars to align."

Irwin is looking for an "American tourist," similar to his family's love stories

During his conversation with PEOPLE, Irwin made it clear that although he hadn't found his perfect mate, he wouldn't mind a love story like his sister's and parents'.

He explained that his sister Bindi Irwin — who married Chandler Powell in March 2020 — and their parents both met their matches at the Australia Zoo in Queensland, Australia.

"Everyone met here at our wildlife sanctuary," he said, noting that Terri and Steve met when she was visiting the zoo over three decades ago.

"In both instances, there were American tourists that were coming over and visiting the zoo," Irwin said. "So I'm waiting. I'm waiting for that American tourist to come into the zoo and for it all to happen!"

He went on to describe them as "couple goals," chalking their love stories up to fate.

"I look at when my brother-in-law Chandler and my sister Bindi met, it was just meant to be," Irwin said. "And when my mom and dad met, it was this crazy serendipitous, amazing moment that just was a fluke."

Irwin wants a relationship like his parents’

Irwin also spoke to PEOPLE about the ultimate inspiration when it comes to his future relationship: his parents. The wildlife conservationist opened up about how his mother inspired him in the wake of losing her husband.

"She is just the most brave, steadfast, determined human being I've ever met," he said. "And to me, she is just the epitome of a great leader, a great mother, and just a hero to me because she had this life she created with dad and just had the rug pulled out from under her, but she was able to move forward with such grace and still be there for my sister and I."

Irwin continued, "So I look at my mom, I look at my dad and I'm like, that's it. That's who I want to be. That's a perfect relationship."

He's said dating as a public figure is “challenging to navigate”

Amid the Dancing with the Stars season, Irwin got candid about being in the spotlight during a November 2025 interview with The New York Times — and how that's impacted his dating life.

“I never change what I say, what I do, who I am one bit, wherever I am,” he said. "It’s just me, and I stand by who I am."

While Irwin said he has "no persona to hide behind," he admitted that he does try to keep his dating life more private.

“Holy moly, that’s so challenging to navigate,” he said, particularly when “anything you do will be on TikTok the next day.”

He sparked dating rumors with Gomez in November 2025

In November 2025, Irwin sparked dating rumors with Gomez after they were paired together for Dancing with the Stars' Relay Dance round, in which the remaining contestants were matched up with former Mirrorball winners.

After Irwin and Gomez performed a jive to “Dance with Me Tonight” by Olly Murs, judge Derek Hough commented on their chemistry, which led his partner Carson to give a knowing look and prompted fans to speculate about a potential romance between the young stars.

Then, just hours before Irwin took the stage for the Dancing with the Stars finale on Nov. 25, Gomez was spotted greeting him outside of his trailer with a smile and a big bouquet of flowers in photos shared by TMZ. During the show, Gomez supported him from backstage and watched as he rehearsed his freestyle routine.

Shortly after Irwin was announced as winner, Gomez gave him a sweet celebratory hug and shared her support on her Instagram Stories the next day.
