Gene Hackman's Personal Collection Goes for Over $2 Million at Auction After Actor's Surprising Death

The actor's fans have come out in troves for the chance to own a piece of his storied career

Gene Hackman's fans have paid top dollar to own a piece of the late actor's career history.

Hackman, who died at 95 years old earlier this year, left behind a wealth of significant pieces of his life's work, a collection of which was listed for auction by Bonhams auction house. Altogether, the collection has brought in over $2 million dollars, with one final act to go.

The latest pieces to be sold include Hackman’s three Golden Globes — his Cecil B. DeMille Award plus the two awarded for his performances in The Royal Tenenbaums and Unforgiven — with each fetching well above asking price.

The award for The Royal Tenenbaums sold for over $50,000, while the award for Forgiven sold for just over $43,000. The Cecil B. DeMille Award sold for $33,280.

Fans of Hackman's role as Royal Tenenbaum in the Wes Anderson classic seemed the most enthralled by the available memorabilia.

A lot that included one 132-page script in CAA wrappers; three handwritten notes, two of which are signed, from Wes Anderson; an unsigned annotated copy of contract with Mordecai Pictures from the agency with unsigned final agreement and production documents; one handwritten note from Henry Winkler; two marketing albums from Touchstone Pictures; and 2 Brooks Brothers black crew jackets sold for nearly $9,000.

Also available were pieces of Hackman’s own artwork, some of which sold for as much as $30,000.

Fans of Hackman's who are interested in owning some of what remains will have the opportunity with The Gene Hackman Collection: A Life in Art, Part III, now open and running through Dec. 4.

This gives fans a chance to collect one of his eight watches (Seiko, Victorinox, Timex and Breitling), more of his own artwork and his studio supplies, as well as other memorabilia from his cinematic career.

Film buffs may be interested in Hackman's early and unfinished draft for Silence of the Lambs; a group of Crimson Tide material, including production documents, on-set photographs and two congratulatory letters, one from the late director Tony Scott; or items from Enemy of the State, including a variety of production documents, a group of production photos and a letter from director Jerry Bruckheimer to Hackman, among other items.
