Dad and 2 Kids Disappeared After Moving to New Country. He and Daughter Remain Missing Nearly 6 Months After Son Found Dead

A dad and his two kids went missing from their home in Panama earlier this year. The son was found dead a short time later, but the dad and daughter still remain missing six months later.

Ghussan Iqbal, 31, and his two young children, Nousaybah, 2, and Musa, 7 months old, disappeared from their home in Bocas del Toro, Panama, on May 21, according to a GoFundMe started by his family.

On June 11, the family announced through the GoFundMe that Musa had died, while Nousaybah and Ghussan remained missing. 

The Procuraduría General de la Nación, Panama’s Attorney General’s office, announced that the baby’s body was found in the Changuinola River, according to CTV News.

Family went to Panama to try and search for their loved ones, but has since returned to Canada, CTV reported.

Nagham Azzam Iqbal, Ghussan's sister-in-law, said it “takes days” to get an update from the attorney general’s office in Panama, noting that they can only connect through email.

“We don’t even reach out anymore because it’s not useful,” Nagham added.

The relatives said Ghussan had relocated to Panama with his wife, who is from the country, about a year before he and his two kids disappeared, according to CTV News.

Ghussan is said to have left his home with the two kids around 6 a.m. local time on May 21, and has not been heard from since.

Nagham previously told the news outlet that Ghussan, who had some struggles with mental health issues, seemed fine when he spoke with her husband via video chat days before the disappearance.

Now, Sulman said family wants the Canadian government to apply pressure to Panamanian authorities in hopes of accelerating the process of finding their missing loved ones.

“Nothing was adding up to us then and it’s still not adding up,” Sulman told CTV News. He added, “Literally any theory is possible at this point. We have no idea what happened, no proper leads.”

Nagham said the family feels as though “there’s no sense of urgency for this case” and “no thorough investigation” into the disappearance of Nousaybah and Ghussan.

More than $22,000 in Canadian dollars has been raised through the family’s GoFundMe campaign since May 28, with donations going toward the search for the missing individuals and a reward for whoever locates them.

“Of course, we will always hold out hope until there is definite evidence otherwise,” Nagham said, adding, “It’s just very hard to believe that everything’s okay. If they’re alive, they’re not living in a dignified way.”

Panama’s Attorney General’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
