NEED TO KNOW

  • Dick Van Dyke appeared in an extended video for Coldplay's All My Love in 2024
  • The video features Van Dyke dancing barefoot and singing at the piano with Chris Martin
  • "Dick has a quality which I’m not sure how to express in words, but here goes," Martin tells PEOPLE

When Chris Martin called his neighbors, Dick Van Dyke and his wife Arlene, it wasn’t to borrow a spoonful of sugar — but the request was just as sweet.

The Coldplay frontman wanted to know if they’d be part of a video for his new song, All My Love.

The resulting extended cut, directed by Spike Jonze and Mary Wigmore, was pure magic. It debuted on Dec. 6, and a shorter version followed on Dec. 13 — Van Dyke's 99th birthday. In the film, Van Dyke, barefoot and limber in a tan suit, dances and sings along with Martin at his piano in Van Dyke’s Malibu backyard underneath the twinkling nightlights.

“Chris, shall we?” the Mary Poppins star asks in the video, as Martin sings over throwback photos of Van Dyke and mementos from his storied career — including Mary PoppinsChitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Dick Van Dyke Show.

When Van Dyke and Martin sing together in the video, Van Dyke jokes he’s “almost on key!” before showing off his he’s-still-got-it dance moves. He goes on to tell Martin that his favorite lyric of the song is the line, “Until I die, let me hold you if you cry.”

“So beautiful,” Van Dyke says.

As the legendary entertainer nears his 100th birthday on Dec 13, Martin has nothing but nice things to say, he tells PEOPLE for a story in this week's issue.

“Dick has a quality which I’m not sure how to express in words, but here goes. I think he has such humor and goodness and charisma and charm and playfulness, and a beautiful voice and eyes and way of moving; and then under that a deep sincerity and authenticity.”

“It feels like those lighter qualities are maybe his choices in the face of life’s challenge and suffering,” Martin continues. “I think he’s an inspiring man. And in writing this I realize he actually has TWO incredible voices, both singing and speaking, which feels a bit unfair on the rest of us. So really he’s a super-human.”

The enduring entertainment legend is sharing his inspiring wisdom in a new book, 100 Rules for Living to 100 (out now from Grand Central Publishing) in which he shares the ups and downs of his extraordinary life, why he doesn’t fear death and how he hopes to be remembered.

“When you expire, you expire," Van Dyke tells PEOPLE, of the centennial milestone. "I don’t have any fear of death for some reason. I can’t explain that but I don’t. I’ve had such a wonderfully full and exciting life. That I can’t complain.”

At the video’s end, Van Dyke is asked to name any subject, and Martin is to use the topic as the basis of a song. The star chooses old age, as Martin tickles the ivories.

“Old age, old age, old age, old age/You turn another page,” he sings. “All the love that I’ve been feeling/All the breakin’, all the healin’/All the things that I wish I’d done are right/All the days that I was dancin’, all the chances I was chancin’/But I’m still legendary Dick Van Dyke.”

In this week's PEOPLE cover story, Van Dyke says he “doesn’t know” why he holds such a special place in people’s hearts.

"I’ve always been honest," he says. "Everyone I know trusts me to be truthful. I’ll sometimes lie to save somebody’s feelings, maybe. Other than that, I don’t know. I got elected to junior class president in high school and I wasn’t even on the ballot. I was the class clown, so maybe that’s why. I made people laugh.”
