André Holland and Kate Mara Enter a Cursed Affair in Chilling Trailer for “The Dutchman ”(Exclusive)

André Holland and Kate Mara play a cat-and-mouse game in their sexy new thriller. 

The Dutchman stars Holland, 45, as Clay, a businessman whose marriage with wife Kaya (Zazie Beetz) is falling apart. An encounter with the seductive Lula (Mara) “slowly begins to unravel his life,” per a synopsis from distributor Inaugural Entertainment. 

“Clay must discover the truth behind this encounter to get back to his wife, heal his fractured soul and survive the night,” the synopsis adds. 

A new trailer shared exclusively with PEOPLE offers glimpses of the Andre Gaines–directed psychological thriller, co-written by Qasim Basir and based on Amiri Baraka's award-winning play from 1964.

Written amid the Civil Rights Movement and the Black nationalism movement, Baraka's Dutchman made a splash among audiences at the time for its depiction of interracial relationship dynamics. 

This second big-screen adaptation (after the 1966 Shirley Knight and Al Freeman Jr. film) is set in modern-day New York City. It costars Stephen McKinley Henderson, Aldis Hodge, Lauren E. Banks and more. 

“You're trapped in a cycle of yearning, despair, defeat,” says Henderson’s character, a therapist treating Holland’s Clay, in the trailer. “You have to dismantle your curse.”

When Holland asks, “What curse?” Mara, 42, can be seen looming behind him. “What do you think we've been talking about this whole time?” she teases. 

The Dutchman, which premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film & TV Festival in March, is in theaters Jan. 2.
