An 84-year-old woman has been charged in an alleged hit-and-run incident that killed a 6-year-old boy in Australia.
The Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives have charged an 84-year-old woman after she allegedly fled the scene after hitting a 6-year-old boy with her vehicle in Teesdale on March 27, the Victoria Police announced in a news release on Tuesday, Nov. 25.
The boy was struck by the vehicle just after 8 a.m. local time “as he was walking to school” on Bannockburn-Shelford Road and died at the scene, according to police.
The boy has been identified as Caleb Wesley, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) reported. He was reportedly with his two siblings, aged 9 and 12, at the time of the incident.
“The vehicle involved allegedly left the scene and was later located at an address in Teesdale,” the Victoria Police said.

According to the police release, the 84-year-old woman from Teesdale was charged with failing to stop, failing to render assistance and failing to report a collision.
She has been released on bail and is set to appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Friday, Nov. 28.
Wesley was a student at Covenant College in Victoria. The school’s principal, Joshua McEwen, said in a statement that the school was “devastated” by his death and described him as “always one of the first to show kindness to others,” per News.com.au.
“Thank you to all who are praying for Caleb’s family and our school,” said McEwan. “Our prayers are also for the many others who have been impacted, including those who witnessed this tragedy, those who assisted at the scene, as well as the driver and her family.”

PEOPLE has reached out to Covenant College and the Victoria Police for further comment but did not immediately hear back.
