A University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) football player has reportedly been charged with allegedly stabbing two teammates before a game.

On Monday, Nov. 24, offensive lineman Daniel Israel Mincey, 20, was charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault, according to NBC News, the Associated Press and NBC Miami.

Mincey is accused of stabbing his teammates on Saturday at the University's Football Operations Building, NBC Miami reported, citing court records.

The incident reportedly occurred hours before UAB Blazers football team played against the University of South Florida, where they ended up losing 48-18. The athlete was subsequently held on a $90,000 bail at Jefferson County Jail.

PEOPLE has contacted the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Jefferson County Jail and Birmingham Police Department for comment, but did not immediately receive responses.

A criminal complaint claimed that Mincey attempted "to intentionally cause the death of Jasire Peterson ... by stabbing him with a knife,” per NBC News.

Another complaint alleged that Mincey’s "assault 1st degree" assault was committed when he allegedly carried out "serious physical injury to Joshua Underwood ... by stabbing him with a knife."

"We are currently focused on gathering information and reviewing the evidence, which has not yet been fully received," Mincey’s family’s attorney David Bigney said, per the outlet. "We ask for patience as the legal process moves forward."

“Saturday was a very sad day for UAB football and for UAB athletics,” UAB Athletic Director Mark Ingram said at a news conference Monday.

Interim head coach Alex Mortensen added that the two injured players have been released from the hospital and were "recovering.”

He also added that the rest of the players will be offered counseling sessions and the option of stepping away from practice.

Both of the injured players were defensive linemen, per NBC News.
